Paolo Ignazio Pietro Porro
(11/25/1801 – 10/8/1875)
Engineer, Optician and Geodesist

Anyone with a basic knowledge of optics immediately associates the name ”Porro” with binoculars and prism erecting systems. However, it is not only binoculars that have immortalized the name of the Italian engineer and Italian inventor Ignazio Porro. He not only developed the erecting systems named after him and used them to build binoculars, but he also focused his work on camera lenses.

Porro, who was also involved with land surveying during his service as an officer in the artillery, also concentrated his activities on the construction and enhancement of geodetic instruments and coined the term ”tachymetry”.
We would like to thank the Wayenborgh publishing office in Ostend for kindly supplying us with photos and information for this text. The book ”Die Fernrohre und Entfernungsmesser” by Albert König and Horst Köhler, 3rd edition, 1959, was also of great help to us.
