Frequency combs on the basis of femtosecond lasers have made it possible to directly measure optical frequencies, allowing considerable progress to be made in measuring technology. The fundamental, pioneering work of Theodor W. Hänsch and John L. Hall, which earned them the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2005, was successfully continued by Jun Ye among others and used to open up new applications. These include the development of optical clocks, novel spectroscopic techniques and ultra-fast precision lasers.
