| Frodo’s companion |

In addition to Sam, what else accompanied Frodo on his suspenseful journey to Mount Doom? Lenses from Carl Zeiss.

More than 100 ZEISS lenses were used to film the epic adventure to save middle earth. These included not only “Ultra Prime” wide-angle and tele lenses, but also extremely powerful “high speed” lenses. Several of them were even proto- types and were used for the first time during filming of J. R. R. Tolkien's masterpiece. Director Peter Jackson had the lenses rushed in from Germany to New Zealand. |

| Cinematographer Andrew Lesnie trusted the “Ultra Prime” lenses for their high imaging quality for close-ups, in particular. For the many extreme close-ups, it was important for Lesnie to show the details with spectacular, crisp focus. Furthermore, a third of the scenes in the movie were made with special effects. The lenses must have very good chromatic correction (correction of color defects) to ensure that the tricks of the trade are not disclosed. Thus, lenses from Carl Zeiss played a key role in the Academy Award for Special Effects. |
