The optical systems made by Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH are world-renowned for their quality and precision.

Tightest tolerances in large numbers – less than one angular second in plane optics and in the nanometer range in spherical optics – call for skilled staff and special manufacturing techniques. State-of-the-art CNC machines are also employed hand in hand with traditional techniques.

Flat optical components, for instance, are polished using multiple block techniques, with the lapping process achieving peak-to-valley heights of below 0.12µm.

Finished spherical components, for example, are obtained from blanks in flow production. The machines used in this process feature automatic material feed and a roll-over unit and perform grinding, polishing, centering and bevel-edging. After polishing, the peak-to-valley heights achieved are less than 0.7nm.

Despite all precision, modern high-performance optics are not possible without modern thin-film processes.

For this reason, the development and production of "thin films" on state-of-the-art equipment is absolutely essential to Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH to be able to meet the demands made on optical high-tech-units and individual components.
