"During the past ten years, Berlin has probably been photographed more often than any other city in the world". With his photos of historic monuments in Berlin, Edgar Zippel wants to show us examples of architecture that apparently have their roots in the distant past and that, strictly speaking, have been photographed far too often already.
Zippel came to Berlin in 1995 and set himself the task of re-photographing these historic monuments and developing his very own forms of photographic expression. He looked for very personal perspectives, did not care about converging verticals and decided in favor of a more intense approach to color rendition. "During this project I took the liberty of doing everything that any decent, self-respecting architectural photographer would never do."
To rise to this self-posed and ambitious challenge, Zippel used a Hasselblad camera featuring a Carl Zeiss PlanarŪ 80mm lens, a combination that does not permit perspective correction. Experiments with filters and color calibration resulted in the desired, unusual color rendition. "The series was photographed in a lighthearted way, and they should be viewed in exactly the same manner." | back
