Zeiss/Arri ULTRA PRIME Set Widens: The New UP 12

Zeiss and Arri are about to introduce a new wide angle lens in the Ultra Prime range of 15 high quality fixed focal length cine lenses for the the Super 35 format: the Distagon T* 1,9/12 (UP 12). The new Distagon T* 1,7/12 covers an image angle of 103º and closes the gap between the Distagon T* 2/10 (113º, the widest angle lens in the Ultra Prime range today), and the Distagon T* 1,7/14 (92º).

In the new Distagon T* 1,9/12, Zeiss uses 15 lens elements arranged in 12 groups achieving impressive optical performance. The resolving power goes beyond 250 linepairs per millimeter. In shape, size, and weight, the new Distagon T* 1,9/12 lens is similar to the Distagon T* 2/10.

Lateral chromatic aberration, usually the Achilles heel of wide angle designs, is particularly well corrected by using optical glass with anomalous dispersion. Distortion is also well corrected to ensure that straight lines in front of the lens remain straight on film. ”Breathing”, the visible variation of image angle or magnification with focusing, is kept extremely low, to the point that it is virtually unnoticeable.

An internal focusing design keeps the performance on constantly high level over the entire focusing range from infinity to 300 mm from the film plane. The Zeiss internal focusing design has been a well proven feature of all Ultra Prime lenses, which contributes significantly to the superiority of today’s Zeiss optics in the cine lens world.
