Versatile assistants have been called many things in the past, from jack of all trades to handyman, to multitalented all-rounder. Now there is a term that signifi es even greater versatility: N95. An extraordinarily powerful piece of technology is behind this name. First name Nokia, last name N95: the compact assistant you can take anywhere. It is capable of smoothly handling practically all office communication applications at high transfer rates, while also sporting a camera for photos and videos (with a ZEISS lens system, of course) as well as GPS navigation and powerful music entertainment software. All squeezed into a format that our parents would have called cigarette pack sized. Not cheap, but unbeatably versatile.
Smaller, lighter, more versatile, more colorful, faster, more communicative… all these features characterize the development of multimedia computers. But these characteristics barely give an idea of the range of astonishing innovations that have actually been made in this field. Until recently, fi ve megapixel cameras were still fi rmly in the professional league. The N95 now offers such an extraordinary wealth of functions in addition to the camera that it takes quite some time to learn where to fi nd what you are looking for! Some relearning is necessary for people used to working exclusively with cameras: in the world of multimedia computer, the sides of the device are described differently than standard cameras. The front is where the display is, and the back is where the Carl Zeiss lens system awaits use behind its protective cover. A Tessar 1:2.9/5.5 lens (35mm equivalent) forms the eye of the camera, which reproduces the scene being viewed on a microsensor with 2592 x 1994 pixels. With its four optical elements, this lens corresponds to the classic Tessar type. Designed with a fixed focal length, it also has an integrated digital zoom. The system is equipped with an autofocus feature that also functions in macro photography at a range of 10 cm.
The video resolution of the N95 also allows recordings to be made at VGA resolution (640 x for 80 pixels) at up to 30 frames per second. Video sequences are stored in the MP4 data format. The recording capacity is based on the device‘s internal memory and the capacity of the memory card used.
Our great-grandfathers would probably have thought we were crazy if we had told them that one day we would be able to record a fi lm using a cross between a typewriter and a telephone that would fi t into our pants pocket! |
