How do 2-Megapixel digital cameras compare to APS, and 35 mm SLR?
Recent tests in the Carl Zeiss applications lab showed very interesting results:
Comparing the Sony DSC-F55 Cyber-shot 2.11 megapixel digital still camera with Zeiss Distagon 2,8/6,85 to another digital camera with 2.3 mega-pixel, plus a very popular, best selling APS camera, and a typical 35 mm point-and-shoot, and a high quality 35 mm Contax SLR, made clear where digital consumer cameras stand today with regard to image quality.
In a joint press conference of Sony and Carl Zeiss at the Zeiss Oberkochen plant numerous prints were presented to the press. Five important facts can be stated as a result of the comparison:
• Modern digital still consumer cameras can deliver an image quality that justifies full page prints.
• The pixel count alone does not tell the whole story. A 2.11 megapixel camera from Sony with Zeiss lens produces clearly better pictures than a competitor’s 2.3 megapixel model with no Zeiss lens.
• Pictures taken with the Sony Cyber-shot digital camera with built-in Zeiss Distagon lens are clearly sharper than those taken with a very popular APS camera.
• The Sony Cyber-shot reaches the image quality of a typical 35 mm point-and- shoot camera or a top notch APS camera like the Contax Tix.
• The Contax 35 mm SLR is still the winner in this competition, be it in image quality or creative options. However, the gap is narrowing… | |
