NASA buys more Tele-Tessar T* 4/350 FE

The NASA has taken delivery of several more modified Tele-Tessar T* 4/350 FE lenses to be used with their new Hasselblad 203 S space cameras. The 203 S space camera is based on the Hasselblad 203 FE camera, but it is equipped with a special version of the winder CW. It uses 70 mm perforated film in magazines with extensive data storage capabilities, and can be used in full space vacuum during extravehicular activity (EVA).

NASA is using a broad range of different Zeiss lenses in their space missions. The Tele-Tessar T* 4/350 FE is mainly used to shoot smaller areas of the earth's surface from the orbiting space shuttle. For quality reasons, these photos are taken with Hasselblad medium format cameras. Since the space shuttle is moving at rather high velocity, fast shutter speeds are mandatory to avoid motion blur in the photos. Therefore, NASA astronauts use the high speed of the Tele-Tessar T* 4/350 FE and prefer to use it wide open to obtain the shortest possible exposure time, set by the Hasselblad 203S TTL auto exposure system.
