Zeiss/Arri ULTRA PRIME Set Goes Tele:
The New UP 180
Compressing the third dimension and creating extremely shallow depth of field is often the desire of a director of photography in feature films and commercials.
Until now, genuine cine lenses were not available for this need, so the cine industry adapted fast telephoto lenses from 35 mm photography. These lenses and the images which they created quite often were somewhat of a compromise in terms of sharpness, brilliance and color saturation. The new Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 1,8/180 (UP 180) in the range of super color-matched Zeiss/Arri ULTRA PRIME lenses will change all this. The UP 180 was designed from scratch to deliver telephoto images of stunning quality for Super 35.
In the new Sonnar T* 1,8/180, Zeiss incorporates 9 lens elements, some made of special optical glass with anomalous partial dispersion, arranged in 7 groups. The new lens features outstanding optical performance with extremely well corrected chromatic aberrations: Wide open, at T 1.9 it is able to deliver with ease the f/4 performance of the famed Zeiss Sonnar T* 4/180 CFE for Hasselblad, which has become a hallmark for image quality in still photography. Stopped down by 2 steps, the image quality of the UP 180 further increases to amazingly high levels. With newly developed light absorption techniques and the Carl Zeiss T* multi-layer anti-reflex coating, veiling glare is minimised. And so is distortion.
Optical performance is maintained on a consistently high level over the entire focusing range (down to 2.6 m from the film plane). This well-proven Zeiss internal focusing design contributes significantly to the superiority of today’s Zeiss/Arri Ultra Prime optics in the cine lens world.
