The ultimate FCS!

What do you think of our “trick”? Were we able to convince you? Just by concentrating on the inner field circle and counting the players, you were able to learn a great deal about the game itself. A pretty easy task - don’t you think? The only prerequisite being not many players on the field and players that move through the centre field.

This is similar to Fluorescence-Correlation-Spectroscopy. Just replace the inner field circle with the confocal volume and the football players for the marked molecules. You don’t have to do the counting anymore; the sensitive detectors do that job for you. See, what happens in the confocal volume by focusing on the centre field!

You can see a small marked blue molecule, a larger red one and a combination of both. The molecules can be distinguished by their marking. This is very similar to the coloured jerseys of the players. Since the molecules are constantly in action, it can occur that they pass through the confocal volume. Just like the players who run through centre field. The small blue molecule is naturally faster than the large red one. You know by now that they could have had the same colour. They could have been differentiated just like the Senior from the Junior players. This is absolutely correct. Our example also demonstrated what happens when a small molecule binds itself to a larger molecule. This same thing happens in the offence strategy of our players; whenever you see a red signal, you see a blue signal as well.
