Frost & Sullivan

LONDON/UK, OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 20.06.2007.
Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company, confers the 2007 European Optronics Product Line Strategy of the Year Award on Carl Zeiss Optronics GmbH, a key provider of high-fidelity imagery systems. This Award is presented in recognition of the company’s key successes across the breadth of the electro-optic space. A major manufacturer of precision optics and electro-optics systems, the company develops, among others, infrared systems for defense and security end users.

“With a leading relative market positioning in the European Union market space, ZEISS’ product innovation is the hallmark of its top-tier, highly adaptable offering,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Christopher Dabrowski. “Given its results-driven partnering strategy aimed at on- shoring key best-in-class capabilities and a leading-edge internal research and technology capability, Carl Zeiss Optronics is one of the key innovators in product line strategy.”

Adopted as the designer and supplier of a key subcomponent for the French ‘Reconnaissance Nouvelle Generation’ (Reco-NG) pod system, Carl Zeiss Optronics’ optical system is the culmination of extensive experience in the reconnaissance systems space. Serving earlier the German and the U.S. market, this presence has expanded significantly with the procurement of reconnaissance and targeting pods utilized, for instance, by the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Spanish Air Force, Swedish Air Force, Hungarian Air Force and South African Air Force. This positioning, along with a unique relationship with the Panavia GmbH and the Eurofighter GmbH, has led to efforts by the European Aerospace Defense and Space (EADS) group to have Carl Zeiss Optronics integrate the Litening pod system into a Eurofighter configuration.

Although the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) space is considerably more competitive, the integration of ZEISS’ Ophelios system into a German UAV is a strong launching point into the burgeoning tactical UAV market area. A strategic improvement in this segment will be achieved by the majority interest in Denel Optronics. The South African company is one of the leading manufacturers of stabilized platforms for the integration of optical and optronic sensors.

Cooperation with key customers
“Acting as an integrator and an equipment manufacturer is a key element of Carl Zeiss Optronics’ strategy for market penetration,” remarks Dabrowski. “While developing products around several key customers, the company has demonstrated its ability to market its equipment as a best-in-class sub-assembly, rather than limiting itself to complex integrated systems.” The company has used strong technology partnerships with non-EU providers to support and grow its market share in the EU sphere. Moreover, augmenting the strong stable of internal and market-facing capabilities, its multi-track sales strategy has positioned its optronics products in multiple high-value growth markets. Finally, in a market area where strategic decisions at the product level inform success at the company level, Carl Zeiss Optronics’ precision optic business is an excellent case of a technology-focused growth strategy.

Award for Product Line Strategy
The Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Line Strategy of the Year is presented each year to a company that has demonstrated the most insight into customer needs and product demands. The recipient company should have optimized its product line by leveraging products with the various price, performance and feature points required by the market.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
