Features of digital cameras
Dynamic range
The number of levels between the charge which is only just detectable and the full charge of the electronic image sensor is called dynamic range and is specified in decibels.

Having as large a dynamic range as possible permits a large number of color levels in the exposure and considerably increases the information content of the image (diagnosis, histology)

Bit requirement of the analog-digital converter: for large dynamic ranges, the internal analog-digital converter must provide the relevant quantity of signal levels. In low-priced consumer cameras, only 8-Bit is frequently used for the image display. The number of possible brightness levels then totals only 28 = 256. With their 10-14 Bit, high-performance cameras can record much more information.
