Stabilised periscopes are broken down into two categories: panoramic and targeting periscopes. They are used in main battle tanks and armoured vehicles for observation and targeting while underway.

The panoramic periscope enables commanders to view the vehicle’s surroundings. Stabilisation delivers a steady image – at all speeds, on paved streets and terrain. The gyroscope stabilisation compensates vehicle movements and vibrations. A thermal imager enables observation during the day, at night and in poor weather conditions.
Once a commander has detected and clarified a potential threat, he can "transfer" the target to the gunners who can track the target at any time using the stabilised targeting periscope. This is equipped with a thermal imager and a laser rangefinder, making it possible to send the target information, including range, to fire control. | |
