LSM 7 MP Multiphoton Microscope

The Multiphoton System for Your Demanding Samples

LSM 7 MP combines the fixed-stage microscope Axio Examiner with a scan head specially designed for the infrared spectrum up to 1300nm. All the system components are optimized for research with your most demanding live samples. Detectors, filters, lasers, and incubation guarantee perfect results in optimized environmental conditions.

Use 2-Photon Microscopy to Obtain Structural Information from Within Tissues or Living Organisms

The LSM 7 MP is optimized for intravital microscopy and the most demanding deep tissue imaging – it is based on the principle of multi-photon microscopy. Because the isolated excitation of a signal takes places in a small, confocal volume, the method works particularly gently on specimens and is thus particularly suitable for experiments with living organisms. By using the high-performance pulsed laser capable of achieving a wavelength of 700 to 1300nm, you can excite two or more fluorescent dyes almost as effectively as an individual photon at half the wavelength.

You can also obtain additional information using supplementary methods such as the second harmonic generation (SHG) acquisition process, and you can gather valuable structural data from tissue without specific staining. Beyond the focal plane, the laser intensity drops exponentially, ensuring no tissue damage is caused by phototoxicity.

Simpler. More Intelligent. More Integrated.

  • Collect More Information on The Structure Of Living Tissue
With a powerful laser and excitation wavelengths of up to 1300 nm, your LSM 7 MP adds extra information to complement the results of conventional multiphoton microscopy. Frequency doubling and tripling let you capture valuable information on the structure of the tissue being examined without specific staining.
  • Use Up To Ten Detection Channels
Capture a wide variety of fluorescent labels. Your LSM 7 MP works with up to 10 detectors for fluorescence and a transmitted light detector. Two simultaneously usable excitation wavelengths interact with the customizable detection to open up opportunities for entirely new combinations.
  • Reproduce Reliable Results - Again and Again
The independent automated adjustment for two direct coupled laser beams ensures perfect overlay in x, y and z. Always capture your images under reproducible conditions. Use the system software ZEN to control all system parameters at any one time.

LD Plan-APOCHROMAT 20x/1.0 – Ultra Deep Imaging for Confocal Laser Scanning and Multiphoton Microscopy

Now, for the first time, you observe neuron networks in brains that are fully intact: the new objective LD Plan-APOCHROMAT 20x/1.0 lets you penetrate into tissue to a depth of up to almost six millimeters and image your sample with excellent sub-cellular resolution.

Experience A New Depth
LD Plan-APOCHROMAT 20x/1.0 opens up a new dimension of optical penetration depth into cleared biological samples – particularly into the brains of mammals. Look deeper into the tissue than ever before - up to six times deeper than with a conventional multiphoton microscope and up to 60 times deeper than with conventional laser scanning microscopy.

You will be impressed by the quality of structural information you retrieve, even from the deepest layers: expect a big push forward, especially in basic neurobiological research and mapping of neuron networks.

Reconstruct in 3D – Fast and Reliable
LD Plan-APOCHROMAT 20x/1.0 is optimized for the Sca/e method. Use this objective for both laser scanning and multiphoton microscopy and you will appreciate how little hardware you need to set up for multi-fluorescence microscopy, for example - you can even conduct spectral imaging.

Histological cutting procedures are a thing of the past with LD Plan-APOCHROMAT 20x/1.0. Reconstruct tissue elements such as cell groups and cellular components more clearly, faster and more reliably in 3D. There’s no need to apply mechanical cuts so you will avoid gaps that could impede or even prevent reconstruction.

LD Plan-APOCHROMAT 20x/1.0 is the convenient and cost-efficient upgrade for your Axio Examiner system. It only takes the newly designed lens holder to make use of it on your existing system.

Gain New Insights with OPO or Two Simultaneous NLO Lasers

Now you can use your Carl Zeiss multiphoton microscope with two NLO lasers at the same time - or use an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with an NLO laser. It’s your choice: both combinations are fully integrated into your LSM 710 NLO, LSM 780 NLO or LSM 7 MP.

This simultaneous availability of two different excitation wavelengths for multiphoton imaging opens up valuable options for you:

  • Imaging of multiple stained specimens
  • Imaging and manipulation with optimal wavelengths
  • Imaging of red fluorescent proteins

Combine Imaging with Second and Third Harmonic Generation

Your system uses different laser wavelengths to excite several fluorescent dyes and proteins simultaneously. The automatic free beam adjustment synchronizes both excitation beams precisely with each other. Manipulate your sample with one wavelength and record the result with another wavelength. Your tests can be reproduced at any time.

The systems are especially well suited for intravital examinations - for example, for research into functional relationships in mouse brains.

The optical parametric oscillator extends the excitation range of your multiphoton microscope to up to 1300nm. Now your system will cover the absorption maximum of red fluorescent proteins such as mCherry, mPlum and tdTomato. This means you can set up long-wavelength excitation precisely and treat your samples with maximum care.

The OPO laser can work with very high intensity. The excitation light doubles and triples its oscillation frequency within the tissue. The non-linear effect of frequency doubling occurs, for example, in muscle fiber and collagen molecules.

Frequency tripling becomes visible on regions where structures with inconsistent optical density converge – for example, at lipid-water boundaries between membranes and cytoplasm.
