Launching the ZEISS fiber-optic SKYMASTER ZKP 4 Small-Dome Planetarium meant no less than a revolution for friends of a sky projected by an optical-mechanical star projector. ZEISS presented a completely new design of such a machine for small and medium-sized domes. The brilliance of the stars surpassed all expectations, and people queuing up to see them had to put up with long waiting times. Now ZEISS is about to set up a new performance record with SKYMASTER ZKP 4 LED. Finally, LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are available as light sources, which are not only bright enough for star projection but also provide the necessary evenness of lighting.
Introducing LED illumination, ZEISS sticks to its concept of a realistic simulation of the night sky. The number of stars of the northern and southern skies projected remains approximately 7000 – the quantity which a human eye can perceive under premium conditions, and which will not overload the view of the heavens in a planetarium of small or medium dome size.
The new sky is three times as bright as the earlier one. With a color temperature of 6500 K, ZEISS for the first time accomplishes a completely white starfield that is even more realistic than it has ever been produced by earlier small planetarium models. Matching planet projectors do also feature LED light sources and color filters. In addition to the high light yield and the natural colors, LEDs have another notable advantage: Their service life of approximately 60,000 hours corresponds to virtually 20 years of operation and cuts maintenance costs.
ZEISS SKYMASTER ZKP 4 LED is conceived for domes with level horizons and 6 to 15 m in diameter. This model is the ideal optical-mechanical companion to team up with ZEISS fulldome systems, such as powerdome VELVET and powerdome SPACEGATE Nova.
The fourth generation of the ZEISS small-dome planetarium offers a great many new functions. Sun, Moon and all planets are positioned with topocentric accuracy. A built-in elevator allows the machine to be lowered to clear the auditorium center for unvignetted projections from the periphery, and limitless azimuth rotation expands astronomical presentation capabilities (optional modules). The new control system and the smart operating concept makes controlling this planetarium machine really easy and great fun, indeed. The astronomical software controls not only the mechanical projector but also the digital planetarium integrated in ZEISS powerdome fulldome systems – with optical and digital skies not merely coupled, but welded to each other.
ZEISS SKYMASTER ZKP 4 LED, though seemingly a midget of a planetarium projector, is great when it comes to performance. It has all the capabilities of a large-dome planetarium machine.
Realistic, true-to-nature Depiction of the Sky
Sophisticated projection systems with ZEISS fiber optics and LED illumination provide the best projection of the starry sky ever seen in a small planetarium. Each individual star is directly lighted by pure white light through a separate optical fiber. The new ZKP 4 sky is three times as bright as the earlier one. The Milky Way, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies are all presented with high detail accuracy.
All-round Talents: The Planet Projectors
Eight projectors present not only the naked-eye planets. Controlled in two axes, these projectors can demonstrate all planets of the solar system, planetary moons, comets, selected satellites, and even selected star motions – all with their exact orbits. With a single control cue, such complex demonstrations as the analemma or the far-out view of the planetary orbits around the Sun can be triggered. ZEISS SKYMASTER ZKP 4 LED now also permits high-accuracy topocentric presentations. Digital control allows fast jumps across long periods of time.
Live or Fully Automatic Operation – as you like it
The control system satisfies state-of-the-art standards, with the hardware providing excellent reliability, and the software enabling exceptionally convenient operation. Live shows are just as easy to do as automatic runs. A handy control panel provides all functions needed for live operation.
Coupling with powerdome
ZEISS SKYMASTER ZKP 4 LED has all capabilities for the integration of modern audiovisual systems including fulldome video projection, and has interfaces for communication with external control systems. The projector can be directly combined with powerdome, the ZEISS platform for fulldome projection. This combination enables synchronous coupling of optical-mechanical and digital projections.
