Protecting the environment and raising people's awareness - that is the goal of the annual Earth Day.
For more than 50 years, hundreds of thousands of NGOs and organizations worldwide, as well as millions of people, have been involved in environmental and climate protection. From planting trees to removing waste from the environment to sustainable agriculture – EARTHDAY.ORG launches multifaceted projects and initiatives in all areas of life and increases its impact daily.1
As sustainability is firmly anchored within ZEISS DNA and the corporate strategy, ZEISS employees volunteered at numerous international locations. From planting seedlings and trees to extensive clean-up activities - ZEISS employees volunteered and contributed to environmental protection within Earth Day in 2023.
Working together for the climate – How ZEISS employees got involved worldwide
In India, ZEISS employees successfully planted 2,000 saplings as part of the continuous sustainability drive. To increase eco-friendliness, the employees used food scraps from the canteens to create manure for these seedlings, as well as filtered water from the plant's wastewater treatment system. "This programme is a wonderful illustration of our dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are delighted to have been a part of ZEISS's path towards a more sustainable future, and we will continue to make substantial contributions in the coming years", stated Arunkumar Shetty (COO of ZEISS India).
In the Philippines, ZEISS employees cleaned up Manila Bay - Dolomite Beach and removed over 20 bags of trash from the environment.
In Singapore ZEISS employees freed the East Coast Beach of litter in a three-hour cleanup campaign, removing a total of 24 kg of trash from the environment.
In cooperation with the Huai Khwang District Office, ZEISS employees volunteered at an Earth Day event at the public park at Petch Uthai Road, Rama 9, Bang Kapi Sub-District, Huai Khwang District, Bangkok. Together they planted 30 trees and cleaned up the area after the event.
Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh & Hanoi)
In Vietnam ZEISS employees aimed to respond to Earth Day 2023 on a global scale by spreading the message among employees and in the community. They successfully motivated not only ZEISS employees but also volunteers from the Xanh Viet Nam community to participate in a community-wide Earth Day campaign. Participants picked up trash filling a total of more than 140 garbage bags, cleaned a two-kilometer stretch of road, and collected more than 350 batteries.
In Korea, Earth Day was about understanding the environmental situation, and how ZEISS is contributing to the change. An environmental activist gave a talk on the current environmental crisis and the difference awareness can make. Afterwards over 40 ZEISS employees participated in a clean-up activity and removed a total of 35kg of trash.
ZEISS employees participated in different clean-up activities. Some employees took care of the arks for wild bees and insects on the site. Other employees freed the environment from litter. Even children from a kindergarten got involved with the environment.
ZEISS is committed to contributing to the environment and encouraging sustainable practice in the day- to-day operations. Based on the global sustainability goals adopted by the United Nations, the three focus topics - climate protection, circular economy, and value for society - were derived and initiatives are being implemented worldwide.
Support for biodiversity
Since early 2022, ZEISS has been supporting the non-profit organization Jordsand, one of the oldest nature conservation associations in Germany – both financially and by providing optics. The aim is to help the migratory and breeding birds on the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts and to protect both the animals and their habitats.

ZEISS uses recycled materials for its newly launched products in the fields of hunting and nature observation. For example, the product bags are made from recycled PET bottles. As a result, more than 16,000 bottles could be recycled in 2021 alone. The cardboard box in which the bag is delivered is also made of completely separable components to simplify recycling.
