... augmented reality is not limited to Pokémon GO?

Even though the initial frenzy has died down a little, there are still plenty of people unsheathing their smartphones in pursuit of virtual Pokémon monsters. For the first time ever, a games app is making augmented reality (AR) accessible to a broad user group. Augmented reality (AR) is the practice whereby a real environment is enhanced with additional virtual content and interactive functions, thereby blending the real and virtual worlds.

 

And it’s being developed at speed all the time. Augmented reality headsets have already hit stores; they allow users to display interactive 3D projections before their very eyes.

AR applications are already proving popular in industrial applications. Take Volkswagen, for example, where production staff are already donning 3D headsets for their day-to-day work. Here, virtual objects such as auto parts and assembly instructions appear above the real cars as they move along the production line. Meanwhile, over at logistics provider DB Schenker, the AR headset uses colorful symbols to let warehouse staff know which shelf they need to go to and how they can package goods in the best possible way. DHL now deploys digital headsets in a number of warehouses to find products more quickly. But the technology is also suitable for production planning, maintenance, training and continuing education, marketing – and to keep tabs on monsters or play other games.

This trend was also confirmed by German corporate decision-makers in a YouGov survey. In addition to using AR in their leisure time, 63 percent of people expect AR to become more prevalent in their day-to-day work.
