36 million people around the globe are blind. Frequently, those affected do not have access to medical care. ZEISS and the Christoffel Mission for the Blind (CBM) have – together with a local partner, the Poona Blind Men Association – opened a new training center for treating cataracts in Pune, India. The goal is to train ophthalmologists and medical personnel throughout the country in phacoemulsification, a modern surgical technique.

In the first three months of fiscal year 2018/19 Carl Zeiss Meditec generated revenue of €323.6m, representing an increase of 9.8% (adjusted for currency effects: +9.0%) compared with the same period of the previous year (prior year: €294.7m). Significant growth was posted in the EMEA1 Europe, Middle East, Africa region, particularly in its core markets Germany, France and Southern Europe. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased significantly to €48.1m (prior year: €38.9m). The EBIT margin also increased, to 14.9% (prior year: 13.2%).

The Aloka Vision Programme provides people in unserved rural areas of India with eye and vision care. In 2018, "eye camps" were set up in the Indian Himalayan Region – and the local inhabitants graciously accepted the assistance.

For the first time ever, a technology developed by ZEISS has made it possible to utilize transparent glass or plastic in a whole range of different ways. The see-through surfaces with integrated, invisible microstructured optics permit a range of different applications, thus enabling innovations like gesture recognition or eye tracking without any visible optical systems.

Half-year revenue grows to EUR 2.8 billion – EBIT at prior-year level despite negative currency effects.
The ZEISS Group is continuing its growth trajectory. In fiscal year 2017/18 (ended on 30 September 2018), the company achieved record-breaking revenue and earnings: revenue increased by nine percent to EUR 5.817 billion (previous year: EUR 5.348 billion). After currency adjustments, revenue rose by 12 percent.
