ZEISS celebrates 200th birthday of its founding father

Carl Zeiss Day and German Optical Museum in Jena

ZEISS celebrates the 200th birthday of its company founder with many different activities and events. A Carl Zeiss biography was published in May, and in September there will be an exhibition about the visionary entrepreneur that illustrates his life and work. The highlight of the celebrations was Carl Zeiss Day on 11 September 2016 in Jena.

A Historical Microscope for the ZEISS Archives

Stand purported to have been made by Carl Zeiss himself

To mark the 200th birthday of its founding father on 11 September 2016, the ZEISS Archives acquired a historical microscope. It it highly likely that the simple microscope, which dates back to 1850, was made by none other than Carl Zeiss himself.

Today in the German city of Jena, eleven students from the Galileo Winzerla school visited ZEISS. They came first in the “Who is Carl Zeiss?” contest for grade school classes held in honor of the 200th birthday of Carl Zeiss.

New Biography of Carl Zeiss Available in Stores

Book sheds new light on the company founder as company celebrates his 200th birthday.

This week, Böhlau publishes “Carl Zeiss. A Biography: 1816–1888.“ It was written by historian Stephan Paetrow and the Head of the ZEISS Archives, Dr. Wolfgang Wimmer. The 144-page book brings the figure of Carl Zeiss to life and is available at bookstores for €19.90. The English edition was published in June.

German Optical Museum to become a reality

With the support of partners from industry, science and the city, the German Optical Museum will be built in the city of Jena. ZEISS seized the initiative to make this museum a reality on the occasion of the 200th birthday of its company founder. The goal is to establish a foundation which will become the sponsor of the German Optical Museum.

ZEISS celebrates the 200th birthday of its founding father by organizing many different activities and events – in addition to Carl Zeiss Day on 11 September 2016 in downtown Jena, there are plans for a touring exhibition and a book.
