ZEISS Celebrates 200th Birthday of Its Founding Father

Carl Zeiss was born in the town of Weimar in 1816. 11 September 2016 marks his 200th birthday. The mechanic opened a small workshop for precision mechanics and optics in Jena in 1846, laying the foundation for today’s global technology player ZEISS.

A Historical Microscope for the ZEISS Archives

To mark the 200th birthday of its founding father on 11 September 2016, the ZEISS Archives acquired a historical microscope. It is highly likely that the simple microscope, which dates back to 1850, was made by none other than Carl Zeiss himself.

Winners of the Elementary School Contest Visit ZEISS

Today in the German city of Jena, eleven students from the Galileo Winzerla school visited ZEISS. They came in first place in the "Who is Carl Zeiss?" contest for grade school classes held in honor of the 200th birthday of Carl Zeiss. The school's "lion" and "hedgehog" classes got an exclusive behind-the-scene look at the ZEISS Archives: there they learned more about the company's founder, his life and how he built up his company. They were able to look at the first ledger from Carl Zeiss in which he entered microscope sales using a quill and ink. A visit to the powerdome Center at ZEISS was also on the agenda.

New Biography of Carl Zeiss Available in Stores

This year the company ZEISS is commemorating the 200th birthday of the company founder with many different activities and events. This week the German edition of Carl Zeiss: A Biography 1816-1888 will be published by the Böglau Verlag. It was written by historian Stephan Paetrow and the Head of the ZEISS Archives, Dr. Wolfgang Wimmer. The 144-page book brings the figure of Carl Zeiss to life and is available at bookstores for €19.90. The English edition will be available in June.

German Optical Museum Jena

Supported by partners from industry, science and the city, the German Optical Museum will be built in the city of Jena. ZEISS seized the initiative to make this museum a reality on the occasion of the 200th birthday of its company founder. The goal is to establish a foundation which will become the sponsor of the German Optical Museum.

The initiators of the planned foundation are: the Ernst Abbe Foundation, the Carl Zeiss Foundation, the city of Jena, Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the company ZEISS. They will work together to raise the required investment volume and to secure the financing for the running costs. The foundation is open to additional partners, and initial discussions with other interested parties have already been conducted.

Carl Friedrich Zeiss was born in the German city of Weimar on 11 September 1816. The company ZEISS is celebrating the 200th birthday of its founding father by organizing many different activities and events – in addition to the Carl Zeiss Day on 11 September 2016 in downtown Jena, there will also be a touring exhibition and a book.

ZEISS will celebrate its prominent founder together with players from the city of Jena, the ZEISS sites in Germany and abroad, and partners from science, industry and society. On the website the company will provide an event calendar in which institutions can enter the events they will hold to mark the 200th birthday of Carl Zeiss.
