Welcome, how are you? Nice to meet you! People are so friendly and helpful here, whether I'm at my apartment complex or at work – in fact pretty much since I first arrived at the airport! It was definitely the right decision to come to Pleasanton, California for 14 months, especially with the big city of San Francisco just around the corner. Working at Carl Zeiss X-ray Microscopy Inc. means that I learn something new every day and get plenty of opportunities to develop myself.

I've been working as a financial controller in Pleasanton for just over six months. Since Carl Zeiss X-ray Micrsocopy Inc. was acquired by the ZEISS Group in July 2013, my job has been to implement all ZEISS's finance and controlling systems at the company. To get things integrated as smoothly as possible, I also coordinate my work very closely with the corresponding department in Germany. It's great working with people here – you generally strike up more personal relationships than in Germany, but people still do things properly and professionally. The slogan "Work hard, play hard" definitely applies to my American colleagues' attitude to their jobs and the way they make the most of their leisure time.

Before I started my new job at the end of last year I rented an RV and drove right down the west coast from San Francisco via San Diego to the Mexican border. I stopped off at amazing wineries and charming little towns and took lots of strolls along the beach. I knew the national parks in California would be impressive from the guidebook, but walking through them was even more beautiful than I expected. Recently I even experienced my first Super Bowl in the USA – that's an afternoon I'll remember for a long time to come!
