CBM and the Tenwek Eye Clinic project

This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the IOLMaster® from ZEISS. In honor of this occasion, ZEISS is donating up to $20,000 USD to CBM. Here are more details on CMB and the project we will support with the donation.

Our partner CBM

Founded in 1908 CBM is an international development organization, committed to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in the poorest communities of the world. As one of the world's oldest and largest organizations working in this field it has supported more than 500 projects in 55 countries and helped over 11 million people.

Blindness and visual impairment in Kenya

Around 46 million people live in the East African state of Kenya. A large part of the Kenyan population is still exposed to extreme poverty, which also reflects Kenya's position on the human development index, the prosperity indicator of the United Nations. The East African country is ranked only 146th out of 188 countries and is considered comparatively poor even on the African continent.

The main causes of blindness in Kenya are diseases such as cataracts as well as bacterial and viral infections of the eye, which can be treated with the simplest means. Especially the proportion of sick children is frighteningly high. The main reason for this is poverty and the associated lack of medical care in the field of ophthalmology.

The project: Expansion of the Tenwek Eye Clinic in Kenya

The primary target group of the supported project are severely visually impaired and blind children from rural regions. Particularly in these areas, parents often lack the financial means to pay for transport to a hospital and treatment. In this project, CBM wants to expand the Tenwek Eye Clinic in the southwest of the country as a strategic location for treatment. The hospital has a capacity of 300 beds. It is also a training hospital where junior medical staff are trained with the help of CBM. The treatment area within a radius of 32 km covers 600,000 people. The donation ZEISS will contribute for this project will help to perform eye operations but also to train new medical specialists including physicians, nurses and opticians.
