Cyber attack:

ZEISS recommends data backups and gives the majority of products the all-clear; patch updates are recommended for a few medical devices only

The global computer attack by the “WannaCry” virus caused substantial damage to corporations and organizations around the world.

To pre-empt a potential loss of data resulting from such attacks in the future, ZEISS recommends the users of its products regularly run data back-ups and store those back-ups in a safe, secure place.

ZEISS can rule out any risk of infection by “WannaCry” in the majority of its medical technology products, such as

  • the entire surgical microscope range,
  • IOLMaster 4 / 5 / 5.5.,
  • IOLMaster 500 (V7.3, 7.5, 7.7) and IOLMaster 700 (1.50),
  • VISUCAM 200,
  • VISUCAM 500,
  • the HFA II and HFA II-i,
  • VISALIS 500, 1.4.1,
  • VISALIS 500,,
  • CALLISTO eye 3.5 and 3.5.1 and
  • VISUPAC < 4.5.0 with Windows XP.

ZEISS recommends the installation of a patch update as a precautionary measure for the following products:

  • VISUCAM 224,
  • VISUCAM 524,
  • IOLMaster 500 (V7.7.7),
  • PRIMUS 200,
  • VISUPAC 4.5.1, 4.5.2 with Windows 7 and
  • VISUSCREEN 100 and 500.

The patches are available on the ZEISS Software Download Portal. They are up to date and secure. Patches for VISUSCREEN 100 and 500 as well as i.Profiler plus will follow shortly.

Please follow the appropriate instructions to install these patches.

The FORUM software itself cannot be infected by the WannaCry malware. However on the computer where the FORUM software is installed, the Windows operating system needs to be on an appropriate patch level to avoid an infection of the underlying Windows system.

The easiest way to achieve this, is to have the built-in Windows update functionality activated and set to:

  • Important Updates: “Install updates automatically (recommended)”
  • Recommended Updates: “Install recommended updates the same way I receive important updates”

If an internet connection then is available, all above updates will be automatically installed using the Windows Update services over the internet.

In case of managed networks, customers need to ensure the patch management via own WSUS or similar technologies. FORUM systems do not have any restrictions which may prevent customer owned patch management solutions.

Same applies to FORUM Go and FORUM Office systems where the Windows update functionality is already configured appropriately by default.
