Microscope in digital dentistry

Day 1: Monday, 7 March 2022

Keynote speaker and moderator

Associate Professor

Marko Jakovac
DMD, MSc, PhD
Zagreb, Croatia

Keynote presentation abstract
The digital industry revolution is more and more present in everyday dental practice. First steps to digital workflow were taken decades ago. However, full digital protocol was not possible before we had digital scanners that are accurate enough for oral rehabilitations.
Beside scanners, we needed new high-precision 3D printers, milling units and materials. Today, we have scientific proof that digital scanners have a similar level of accuracy as analog impressions. New materials have exceptional aesthetical and mechanical properties. We can use them for full arch restorations without any layering. With some limitations, today we can switch to a full digital workflow. From a clinical point of view, the fixed prosthodontic therapy and aesthetic dentistry are particularly demanding for the clinicians if we use a minimal invasive approach. Optical devices and dental microscopes are helpful for clinicians to achieve that goal. In this keynote presentation the implementation of dental microscope in digital dentistry will be explained based on a single clinical case with a minimal invasive approach.

Modern periodontics: Strategy gives you the direction, technology leads the way

Day 3: Wednesday, 9 March 2022

Keynote speaker and moderator

Rino Burkhardt

DDS, MAS in Periodontology
Zurich, Switzerland

Keynote presentation abstract
Even if the evidence-based scientific database of the use of a surgical microscope in periodontics is still limited there is no doubt about its overall beneficial impact on the results and thus its clinical relevance.
The presentation will focus on two aspects of the operating microscope (OPMI), which both substantially contribute to better patient satisfaction and clinical outcome in the treatment of periodontally diseased patients.
The first one is the usage of the Capture Mode, an easy way to take pictures and record videos by simply pressing a button. Such movement of the surgeon’s finger is the beginning of sharing information between the doctor and the patient, which, in turn, is the bedrock of shared decision-making. It is the goal of this part of the presentation to work out the role of the OPMI in the communication process and to discuss how it contributes to a more democratic, more participatory, and more person-centered health care.
In periodontal surgery, magnification allows an enhanced visualization of very small details in the operating site via only a minimally invasive surgical access. But visual perception of very fine tissue structures does not automatically guarantee that the clinician is also able to execute such precise hand and finger movements in order to treat and manipulate the mentioned tissues accordingly. Thus, the second part of the presentation focuses on the value of the OPMI and its benefits in improving the operator’s manual skills. As clinical experience is not enough to acquire technical expertise, a training program for novices and advanced periodontal microsurgry will be outlined as a basis for critical review in the panel discussion.
