Head & Neck IORT
Irrespective of the primary tumor location, the vast majority of recurrences occur at or adjacent to the original tumor site. Due to radiation scattering effects of conventional radiotherapy treatments for head and neck tumors, there is a risk of damaging various anatomically sensitive structures, such as nerves, aorta, muscles or vocal cords. IORT with INTRABEAM 600 from ZEISS enables the delivery of radiation immediately after surgical resection and directly into the tumor bed, reducing exposure to anatomical structures.1 2 3
Treatment Steps

Step 1 The tumor is located with diagnostic imaging.

Step 2 The surgeon exposes the tumor during surgical incision.

Step 3 The tumor is surgically removed. Critical nerves and vessels are protected from the treatment field with surgical instruments.

Step 4 The correct type and size of applicator is selected and the applicator is positioned on the tumor bed.

Step 5 The tumor bed is locally irradiated for about 30 minutes.

Step 6 The applicator is removed, shieldings and structures are replaced and the incision is closed.
