TARGIT boost irradiation for breast cancer:

High effectiveness through targeted irradiation

Local recurrences after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and postoperative External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) normally occur within the original index quadrant of the primary cancer. Additional irradiation of the tumor bed (boost) is therefore part of the standard of care in breast cancer therapy. Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) can be used to deliver a boost to standard EBRT treatment regimen. This boost element of the overall treatment regimen is highly accurate as it is applied at the time when the tumor bed is visualized during surgery.1

Good effectiveness and shorter treatment times

More than 13 years of clinical experience and the treatment of more than 8,000 patients attest to the non-inferiority of IORT in the treatment of breast cancer. The study results show that the recurrence rate is very low with INTRABEAM® IORT. In two studies on intraoperative boost with INTRABEAM comprising a total of 450 patients, the five-year recurrence rate was a low (1.5 to 1.7 percent). These were not selected patients with low risk of a local recurrence.2,3

Radiotherapy with fewer side effects

Studies on acute and long-term toxicity following the intraoperative boost of 20 Gy have shown, the intraoperative boost therapy is tolerated very well by patients. Doctors and patients also found the cosmetic result following the intraoperative boost with INTRABEAM to be very good.4
