ZEISS CALYPSO NZDI provides a uniform software platform for all of your machines, reduces training requirements, minimizes work when moving ZEISS CALYPSO measurement plans from one system to another, and simplifies measurement reporting.

  • System Requirements

    Supported Sheffield Controllers: SMP 300, SMP 350, UMP 360, and SMP 400

    Supported Probes Systems: PH10, PH9, MIP, MIH, PH1

    Supported Probe Sensors: TP200, TP20, TP6, TP2

    Supported Probe Changers: SCR200, MCR20

    Condition of the CMM: It should be calibrated and within OEM accuracy specifications, as ZEISS CALYPSO will read existing and future calibration data. It should also be in proper working order. We recommend you use your existing calibration service.  

    Hardware Not Supported (not inclusive)

    • MP 35 Controller
    • Rotary tables
    • Active or passive scanning sensors. (i.e. SP25, SP600)
    • Renishaw ACR1, ACR2, ACR3 probe changers.

    Additional Notes

    • SMP and UMP controllers may be found on other Hexagon machines, including Brown & Sharpe and DEA. CALYPSO may support these controllers when used on these other machines.
    • Bridge, Cantilever and Horizontal Arm configurations are supported

  • Installation Instructions

    Step 1: Install CALYPSO software and any service packs prior to installing the interface.

    Step 2: Install the CALYPSO NZDI Driver.  These NZDI Drivers can be located in the CALYPSO installation tools.

    Step 3: Modify the configuration settings file for the host machine.

    • For CALYPSO 2017 and after - Run SheffieldINISettings.exe to configure the installation to the host machine.
    • For CALYPSO 2016 and before - Modify the SheffieldClient.ini file with notepad.
    • SheffieldINISettings.exe and SheffieldClient.ini file are located in (note the three underscores before and after NZDI): C:\Users\Public\Documents\Zeiss\CALYPSO\config\equip\___NZDI___\SheffieldInterface
    • If you want to capture a log file and configuration of the system, use the CALYPSO Error Report. All interface log files and configuration settings will be captured in the error report. Log files that the interface generates are stored in: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Zeiss\CALYPSO\log

    SheffieldClient.ini Definition and Recommendations


    • CalypsoPort= nonCZcontrol (TCP/IP port for interface. No need to change.)
    • Logging = 8 (Creates debugging logs. Default is 8. Choose 1 through 10 for logging details.)
    • CommPort = 1 (RS232 PC port connected to controller. 1 or 2. See Windows Device Manager to verify.)
    • BaudRate = 19200 (Controller type guidelines: SMP300, SMP350, UMP360 = 19200; SMP400 = 57600.)


    • PHType = 10 (PH10=10, PH9=9, MIP=1, MIH=1, PH1=1)
    • SystemRotation = 180.0 (Do not change this value.)
    • WristOrientation = -Z-Y (Do not change this value.)
    • IsMoveableHead = true (PH10, PH9, MIP, and MIH are all =true. PH1 should be set to = false)

    System Parameters

    • TouchSpeed = 5.0 (CMM speed during approach to probing. Range is 2.0 to 8.0 mm/sec. Recommend 5.0)
    • MaxMoveSpeed = 300.0 (Max. travel speed of CMM. See CMM specs for value. Range is 50.0 to 300.0 mm/sec)
    • CMM_Number = 00000 (Do not change this value.)


    • XOffset = 0.0 (Distance in mm from quill end to wrist of probe. Recommend XOffset=0.0)
    • YOffset = 0.0 (Distance in mm from quill end to wrist of probe. Recommend YOffset=0.0)
    • ZOffset = -90.0 (Distance in mm from quill end to wrist of probe. Recommend ZOffset=-90.0)


    • ZeroOffsetX = 0.0 (Distance in mm from CMM home to most left position.)
    • ZeroOffsetY = 500.0 (Distance in mm from CMM home to most back position.)
    • ZeroOffsetZ = 0.0 (Distance in mm from CMM home to most top position.)


    • HomingXoffset = -72.2667 (Values are defined by the interface. Do not modify.)
    • HomingYoffset = -197.3090 (Values are defined by the interface. Do not modify.)
    • HomingZoffset = 320.1937 (Values are defined by the interface. Do not modify.)

    Step 4: Configure CALYPSO and connect to the NZDI driver.

  • Calibration Instructions

    By design, the installation of ZEISS CALYPSO on non-ZEISS OEM machines does not require a machine calibration or acceptance test.  Machine correction files for machine accuracy are managed by the OEM and reside on the controller. Coordinate data that is sent to ZEISS CALYPSO is considered “calibrated” and is not adjusted or altered. For quality assurance reasons, you may choose to perform an acceptance test of ZEISS CALYPSO and the CMM system. However, if machine accuracy or repeatability is not within acceptable limits, adjustments must be made to the machine and controller using the OEM software as needed. ZEISS Industrial Metrology does not provide this service or machine repair.
