The aim of a mineral processing circuit is to concentrate valuable minerals by exploiting differences in their physical and/or chemical properties. Minerals are rarely fully-liberated, occurring instead as composite particles whose bulk physical properties are dictated by their constituent minerals. In order to quantitatively assess the distribution of a target mineral with respect to a physical property being utilized, the bulk value of each individual particle must be calculated. Automated mineralogy greatly assists in this process by analyzing large numbers of mineral grains and generating particle-specific data for interpretation by the minerals processing engineer.
