The Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) is a private non-profit R&D institute committed to foster and conduct fundamental and translational research and advanced training in biomedical sciences. It was the first recognized Associated Laboratory in Portugal and it has steadily increased the scope of scientific excellence over the years.

CNC brings together researchers from the faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Life Sciences, as well as from the local University Hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry. Its core research lines are Neuroscience & Brain Diseases, Metabolic Disorders and Stem Cell & Molecular Therapies, with a strong focus on the degenerative processes and associated mechanisms of protection and regeneration, along with the development of innovative therapeutic strategies.CNC also provides a rich environment for fundamental research to be translated into applications, featuring a strategic advantage in knowledge and technology transfer since it is a founding partner of the biotechnology innovation center Biocant that hosts 40% of the biotech companies in Portugal.

The Microscopy Imaging Center of Coimbra, at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (MICC-CNC), is a centralized facility where users receive the support required to carry out conventional and advanced imaging techniques, based on Light Microscopy. The unit has combined resources to provide state-of-the-art equipment that is open to all researchers. We offer the same services to academic investigators or companies. The primary goal of the MICC-CNC is to improve the research and teaching environment for the scientific community.

To meet these goals, the MICC-CNC:

  • provides technical training to local users and visiting researchers
  • offers consultation on experimental design and image analysis
  • implements advances in hardware and software relevant for biomedical sciences
  • provides ongoing education in advanced microscopy approaches by organizing trainings courses and workshops
