Watch an XRM Tomography of Lithium Ion Battery Cathode Foils

Understand particle distribution, homogeneity, and density

The video shows a 3D XRM scan of active layers of two lithium ion battery cathode foils that have been simultaneously scanned glued back to back (for efficiency). These foils have undergone different production processes: the left has been calendered (compacted), while the right remained pristine, which can already be seen by the overall thickness and surface roughness of the layers.

Calendering is used to increase the capacity of batteries as it allows more of the active material to fit into a given volume. However, it is important to sustain homogeneity and integrity of the layers and the particles within. XRM is a suitable imaging technique to nondestructively assess these properties of large volumes (mm³) at high spatial resolution (µm) in 3D.
