Forensic Pathology Laboratories

Clinical and Criminal Investigations
In contrast to the more specific term forensic pathology, the general field of pathology is the precise study and diagnosis of disease. Pathology laboratories investigate stained tissue sections or cytological material like blood, cells or smear preparations and monitor the success of treatments. Besides histological assessment, you use specialized methods such as immunohistochemistry or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Microscopes are the essential tool in pathology. At Carl Zeiss, our history of microscope manufacturing is closely connected to pathologists and developing new technologies in close collaboration with scientists. Alois Alzheimer and other neuropathogists relied on the consistent optical quality of ZEISS microscopes to consolidate their findings.

The Ergonomics Are Essential
Optical quality of microscopes and the ergonomics of the instruments are important assets for your routine applications in forensic pathology or the clinical laboratory. You need to process large numbers of slides with tissue samples, blood smears and cytological samples. The evaluation needs to be done quickly and reliably. Time is essential and the technician as well as the pathologist spend many long hours in front of the microscope. With Axio Lab you accomplish routine tasks with maximum comfort and reliability. The ergonomics of your Axio Lab are certified by the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV). Choose ergotubes and ergophototubes according to your individually preferred viewing position. With the multi-discussion-system you easily debate details of your sample with your co-workers and train students and assistants. For your advanced tasks Axio Scope provides a large set of functions, and you have the freedom to only invest in those you really need. Choose between 23 stand variations and illumination options like LED, HBO or XBO lamps. Adapt your highly flexible Axio Scope system to your individual applications in pathology.

Digital Imaging Supports the Pathologist’s Workflow
A thorough and precise documentation of your samples is of paramount importance for medical records and training purposes and in many instances a legal requirement. Maintaining the color temperature and subtle differences in the contrast is crucial to support other diagnostic procedures. Assisted by the contrast and light manager of Axio Imager 2, you image under defined conditions and produce reliable results. With brilliant optics and bright fluorescence you even resolve fine details of your multi-dye FISH specimens.
For fast digitization of large amount of slides in Alzheimer’s disease, cancer or brain injury research, Carl Zeiss offers an integrated solution. With Axio Scan.Z1 you acquire, organize and analyze virtual slides in brightfield and multichannel fluorescence. The system provides flexibility in terms of acquisition parameters and slice dimensions. High image quality and reproducible results ensure reliable image analysis. Use the integrated analysis modules or access images with your own programs. Virtual slides are stored on a web-based database allowing multi-user access with specific access rights and remote viewing.

Laser Microdissection - Isolate High Purity Tissue
The examination of pathological altered cells using molecular methods significantly improves research and diagnosis in forensic pathology. To obtain reliable results with highly sensitive analytical techniques, the pathology lab technician need to isolate specific cell populations with high purity. PALM MicroBeam allows fast and exact separation of your target area without contamination, even down to the subcellular level. With a focused laser you easily cut out tumor tissue or other specific pathological cells for DNA, RNA and protein isolation, mutation analysis and fingerprinting.
