Primo Star iLED

The Flexible, Complete Solution for Testing Tuberculosis

Continuing a tradition started by Robert Koch: Research tuberculosis with a microscope from ZEISS

In 1882, Robert Koch discovered Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the pathogen that causes tuberculosis. Here is another substantial technology contribution from ZEISS to the battle against infectious diseases: Primo Star iLED, the new tuberculosis test microscope.

Primo Star iLED is the flexible solution for tuberculosis test applications with LED fluorescence excitation and transmitted-light brightfield illumination.

Your Decision

Decide for yourself if you want to analyze tuberculosis with Ziehl-Neelsen-Staining or if you like to use fluorescence excitation, e.g. with Auramine O dye. Primo Star iLED gives you the opportunity: simply switch between the two modes.

Special Price for Countries Most Affected by the Disease

The microscope Primo Star iLED is the result of a cooperation between ZEISS and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). As a customer from one of the countries most heavily affected by tuberculosis, Primo Star iLED is available for you at a particularly low price.

An important component for fast and efficient testing

  • Reflected-light fluorescence
  • Rapid switching from fluorescence excitation to brightfield illumination
  • Economical LED concept
  • Battery pack for operation without a main power supply
  • Special eyecups eliminate the need for a dark room during a tuberculosis test
  • Simple to operate
  • Durable and robust
  • Tried-and-tested ZEISS optics made from high-quality glass
  • High-quality materials
  • Worldwide support from ZEISS

Primo Star iLED is the result of a joint project between the Foundation for Innovative Diagnostics (FIND) and ZEISS. Through the targeted promotion of diagnostic innovations, the Swiss foundation FIND has set itself the objective of combating the spread of dangerous infectious diseases.

At ZEISS, the battle against these diseases has a tradition dating back to Robert Koch’s groundbreaking discovery. To this day, the company continues to set the standard with commitment and expertise in the struggle against deadly infectious diseases. Its efforts in this area have enabled ZEISS to come up with the LED-based fluorescence microscope Primo Star iLED, developed specifically for tuberculosis test applications and based on the powerful routine microscope Primo Star.

The success of this collaboration between FIND and ZEISS is plain to see: Primo Star iLED is offered at a particularly favorable price to public health services customers in the high burden countries as defined by the WHO.

Auramine staining for tuberculosis diagnosis with fluorescence microscopy and Primo Star ilED

In this video tutorial Dr Harald Hoffmann, MD and head of the WHO-certified supranational reference laboratory IML in Gauting, Germany, demonstrates how to stain smear preparations for diagnosis of tuberculosis with fluorescence microscopy and ZEISS Primo Star iLED.
