Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium, Fernbank Science Center

The Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium at the Fernbank Science Center is an operation of the De Kalb County Board of Education. It is the biggest of all US planetariums run by a school authority. Nevertheless, the planetarium is not restricted to school use but offers a wide range of shows to the general public as well.

In 2011, after comprehensive renovation the Charles Hayden Planetarium reopened with a STARMASTER projector. It is visited by about 200,000 guests every year and has expanded its educational offering. The building was designed by the Rio de Janeiro architect Sérgio Bernardes. Its structure resembles a flying saucer. Due to structural problems the planetarium was closed several times. It reopened with a fulldome upgrade in 2013. The planetarium regularly offers exhibitions and educational, cultural and scientific events related to astronomy.

The planetarium in Rio de Janeiro is actually a double planetarium. The smaller dome dates back to 1970. The "bigger brother" is a building with a large dome over an inclined auditorium. ZEISS was the main contractor for all of the technical equipment. The projection machine is a UNIVERSARIUM Mark VIII installed on a lift. Behind it is a German made wide-angle movie projector.
