Application: Coatings of Outer Lenses and Reflectors

The outer lenses and reflectors of car headlights are coated with performance layers to increase their reliability, robustness and endurance. ZEISS spectrometer systems measure the coating using optical components and software to verify that they are thick enough to achieve their purpose. 

  • Hardcoating and Antifog-Layer

    Outer lenses are coated with special layers to prevent scratches and reduce the effect of road object impact and resist the effects of weathering over time. They also protect the headlight from ultraviolet rays and to prevent fogging. The below listed polycarbonate coating systems can be measured using ZEISS spectrometer systems:

    • Hardcoating (e.g. PHC587 or UVT)
    • Hardcoating (outside) and antifog-layer (inside)

  • Protection Coating

    Headlight reflectors are vapor coated with a mirror-like aluminum coating. In order to protect this coating from oxidation it is layered with a protective coating. The correct thickness of these coatings which are typically made of HMDSO or SiO2, are tested and certified in metrology laboratories.

  • Yellow Grade

    Headlight reflectors are vapor coated with a highly reflective aluminum coating. Even when the coating is deposited correctly, the reflector's appearance can have a yellowish or blueish tint. ZEISS yellow grade measurements option can help to quantify the degree of tint and ensure the correct appearance of the headlight.
