Reduced eye strain thanks to a new pair of glasses

When preparing her exhibitions, gallery owner Keiko Tanaka spends up to 12 hours per day in front of the computer screen – and experiences ongoing discomfort caused by digital eye strain.

We accompanied her on her search for the optimum solution to meet her vision needs.

Keiko Tanaka has already completed a lot of her work for the day when she unlocks the door to her gallery in a Munich suburb at 2:00 PM. "It's eight hours earlier in Japan," she explains. "That's why I check my emails in the morning before going to the gallery and use the time to Skype with artists in Japan."

Ms. Tanaka invests a lot of time staying in close contact with young artists because it's important to her that she and the artist know each other well before they collaborate. This means she spends a lot of time on her computer and phone. If you suffer from burning eyes or headaches when working at the computer or using your smartphone, this might be the result of not having a pair of glasses or not having the right pair of glasses.

"Generally I sit at the computer for about eight hours per day. But when things get busy before a new exhibition, I'm there for up to twelve hours."

When we visit her gallery, we find Keiko Tanaka sitting at a large desk, deep in thought as she works on her laptop. After greeting us, she talks about the significant amount of research her job requires: "Only a few Japanese artists are well known internationally. Thus we try to bring young artists to Germany, most of whom are already famous in Japan." Finding these artists means performing extensive online research, reading art magazines and searching social media platforms for the artists' profile pages.

A workout for her eyes

Ms. Tanaka notices the typical symptoms of eye strain after just a few hours. "My main problem is the distance between my eyes and the computer screen," she explains. "I don't enjoy clear vision at shorter distances. Also, my eyes tire quite quickly and begin to hurt after working at the computer screen for a long time. I tend to lean rather far forward, with my head close to the screen. I can feel the tension in my neck, and I often have headaches." Her digital life is not limited to work, either: she's an avid photographer and digitally edits her pictures.

Online vision analysis with ZEISS

Eye strain caused by digital devices is a familiar problem. These days many people use screens without thinking twice and are online at all hours. Typical symptoms include burning eyes as well as neck pain or headaches. When searching for a solution to relieve her irritated eyes, Keiko Tanaka came across the online eye test from ZEISS.

The decisive factor when selecting the right solution was the many hours she spends using her computer and smartphone. ZEISS Digital Lens with a DuraVision® BlueProtect coating were inserted into Ms. Tanaka's frames.

These lenses are specially optimized for her visual habits when using digital devices, thanks to the lens design and light-filtering properties of their coating. And Keiko Tanaka is already quite excited about her new lenses: "I love my job and am looking forward to enjoying more comfortable vision at work."

About Keiko Tanaka

Keiko Tanaka was born in Hiroshima, Japan. After studying math, sculpture and art history, she worked as a teacher. She moved to Munich in 2005, where she learned German and began working as a creative manager at her boyfriend's photo agency. Focusing on artistic photography reminded her more and more of her time as a student, ultimately sparking the idea of opening an art gallery with her partner Michele Vitucci. The Micheko Gallerie opened its doors in 2010 with a focus on 21st century art from Japan.
