ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect - ideal for indoor activities

Targeted blue light protection for clear lenses

The effect of blue light on our vision is a growing topic of discussion as we are exposed to light waves with blue components both indoors and outdoors. On the one hand, we need blue light for a healthy body and our general well-being. On the other hand, blue light can be dangerous – especially in strong sunshine. We protect ourselves with sunglass lenses. However, we are now exposed to more blue light than ever before due to modern light sources such as LED lighting and the radiation emitted by digital devices. Do you work at a computer every day for long periods of time and in rooms with modern lighting systems? Some people find that the blue light emitted by lights and displays makes them feel tired and uncomfortable. Clear lenses with the ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect coating offer a durable coating with CleanCoat technology to make them easier to clean as well as a blue filter which attenuates blue light in the range from 390 to 440 nm (wavelength of blue light hazard).

Protection against harmful blue-violet light for clear lenses

    • Helpful for wearers who are concerned about the potentially harmful effects of blue-violet light indoors and who are looking for the appropriate protection.
      • ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect is a new coating for clear lenses featuring a blue filter which attenuates blue light in the range from 390 to 440 nm.
      • However, it lets through the "healthy" blue light we need for our bodies. Studies have shown that blue light in the range between 400 and 520 nm (with a maximum at 460 nm) is very important for regulating the level of melatonin and therefore for controlling our biorhythm and wellbeing.
      • Durable coating with CleanCoat for easy cleaning - it's all included.

    Who needs DuraVision® BlueProtect?

Protection against blue-violet light, also indoors

ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect is a special lens coating for people who spend a lot of their time indoors and are exposed to the potentially harmful blue light emitted by LEDs, televisions, computer screens or tablets and who are concerned about their exposure.

    Good and bad blue light

Too much light in the ultraviolet and blue-violet bands can permanently damage the human eye. As well as lead to painful inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, it can also cause damage to the eye's crystalline lens (e.g. cataracts) and especially to the retina (macular degeneration). That's why it is so important to wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection in strong sunshine, especially in situations where there is a lot of glare such as on the water or snowy mountain slopes.

What about frequent indoor exposure to light sources with a high proportion of blue light?

Increasing attention is now being paid to the strong blue light component of LEDs, energy-saving bulbs and the radiation emitted by display devices such as smartphones, computer screens, tablets and e-readers.

Blue light radiation from light sources or display devices can be irritating or tiring for some people's eyes. This is where ZEISS lenses with DuraVision® BlueProtect can help. They attenuate the blue light in the range from 390 to 440 nm – without compromising the positive properties of blue light in the range from 450 to 500 nm.

At a glance: the pros and cons of blue light

    Pros Cons
    Controlling our biorhythm
Studies have shown that blue light in the range between 400 and 520 nm (with a maximum at 460 nm)
is very important for regulating the level of melatonin and therefore for controlling our biorhythm and wellbeing.
    Increased risk of retinal disease
Some studies suggest that long exposure to blue light below 460 nm (with a maximum at 440 nm) may lead to photochemical damage of the retina.
This damage may constitute a risk of macular degeneration in the long term.
