Based in the City of Optics and an established part of the optical industry: Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH, with its high quality and precise binoculars, riflescopes and spotting scopes, plays a key role in the optical industry and is a definite technology leader in this market.   • StudiumPlus

    StudiumPlus at Carl Zeiss

    StudiumPlus is a full degree course including vocational experience. Students are enrolled at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (University of Applied Science) while at the same time being employed at a company in the region. They are taught both technical and social skills. This makes StudiumPlus the ideal entry into the professional world, as it combines study with work.

  • Apprenticeship

    Training at Carl Zeiss

    We want to be successful. That is why the training of young people is a tradition in our company, and one which we value highly.

    With our training opportunities we offer interested school leavers the chance to prepare themselves for the job market of tomorrow. For technical career paths the training takes place in the specially equipped training workshop. Naturally the trainees are supported by an experienced training team throughout their training period.
    Currently over 35 trainees are undergoing training at Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH.

    Skilled occupations

    • Industrial Mechanic (m/f)

      Training programme

      The job of Industrial Mechanic is an officially recognised skilled occupation.


      The training lasts 3½ years. In certain circumstances it is possible to complete the course in a shorter time.


      The first 21 months of training teaches core skills. The specific technical qualifications are then taught in the practical field of application.


      Other vocational training, run in tandem with on-the-job training, is carried out at the Werner-von-Siemens College in Wetzlar. This is done on a part-time basis, i.e. one or two college days a week.


      Content of the training course

      The training course for Industrial Mechanic (m/f) includes the following:

      Importance of environmental issues and health and safety at work

      Importance of environmental issues and health and safety at work

      Planning and controlling work processes and motion sequences

      Manufacture of work pieces through manual cutting using various tools

      Manufacture of work pieces through machine cutting using machines

      Manufacture of work pieces through machine cutting using machines

      Component assembly according to technical specifications

      Building and testing pneumatic circuits

      Creating programmes for computer-controlled machinery

      Testing and assessing work results


      Examinations

      After 18 months Part 1 of the extended final examination takes place, in line with the laws on vocational training. This examination counts for 40% of the final overall result. The examination is divided into one practical and one written part.


      At the end of the training period the final examination is taken at the Wetzlar Chamber of Trade and Commerce. It is necessary to answer a wide range of questions and satisfy numerous practical requirements.


      Work area after completing training

      The Industry Mechanic is qualified to work in the production and maintenance of component assembly and systems.


      At Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH this includes particularly the manufacture, assembly, testing, commissioning, inspection and repair of mechanical and optical devices. Possible areas of employment are prototype construction, assembly, service and series production.

      Continued Professional Development

      Through further education undertaken while working full time, employees are able to work towards further professional or technical qualifications up to and including MBA (Masters in Business Administration). It is also possible for employees to choose to improve on their school leaving qualifications and work towards a degree as an engineer or BBAE (Bachelor of Business Administration and Engineering).


      Likewise, there are various qualification and specialisation opportunities available through participation in training courses at various educational institutions.

    • Inventory Management Specialist (m/f)

      Training programme

      The job of Skilled Warehouse Manager is an officially recognised skilled occupation.

       

      The training lasts 2 years. Other vocational training, run in tandem with on-the-job training, is carried out at the commercial school of Dillenburg.

       

      Qualifications

      At least a very good school leaving certificate (Hauptschulabschluss or better)

      Care and diligence

      A willingness to learn and perform

      Reliability and the ability to work in a team

      Content of the training course

      The training as a Skilled Warehouse Manager (m/f) includes the following:

      Warehousing, handling and transporting goods

      Reception and checking of goods for completeness and intactness

      Learning to deal with IT systems in logistics

      Packaging and sending goods and generating the appropriate paperwork

      Relevant knowledge of regulations (e.g. Hazardous Materials Regulations and customs requirements)

    • Precision Optics Engineer (m/f)

      Training programme

      The job of Precision Optics Engineer is an officially recognised skilled occupation.

       

      The training lasts 3½ years. In certain circumstances it is possible to complete the course in a shorter time. The first year of the course is a foundation year. The professional training builds on that in the following 2½ years.

       

      Other vocational training, run in tandem with on-the-job training, is carried out at the Werner-von-Siemens College in Wetzlar. This takes place in block sessions, meaning trainees attend college for two weeks and then work for six to eight weeks at the training site.

       

      Content of the training course

      The training for Precision Optics Engineer (m/f) includes the following:

      Importance of environmental issues and health and safety at work

      Knowledge and awareness of materials and tools

      Care and maintenance of test and measuring devices, machinery and tools

      Separation of glass using various processes

      Lapping and grinding of lenses and prisms using various processes

      Hand and machine polishing using various polishing agents, polishing agent carriers (pitch, plastic) allowing for various manufacturing processes

      Joining optical components through various processes

      Manufacturing planar and spherical optical components

      Programming and operating machines with numerical controls

      Centring according to various processes

      Overlaying (coating), metal-coating optical components

      Testing and measuring using the various testing and measuring devices of precision optics

       

      Examinations

      After 18 months an interim examination is taken, in line with the laws on vocational training. The aim is to establish the present performance level of the training. The interim examination consists of a practical element and a technical discussion.

      At the end of the training period the final examination is taken at the Wetzlar Chamber of Trade and Commerce. It is necessary to answer a wide range of questions and satisfy numerous practical requirements.

       

      Work area after completing training

      The training of the Precision Optics Engineer qualifies him or her to work in any area of the manufacturing process.  Depending to the size of the business, the Precision Optics Engineer will be employed in a specialist area.

      At Carl Zeiss Sports Optics GmbH this tends to be in the manufacture of spherical and planar optical components for various optical devices. The departments of planar and spherical optics preassembly and optical surface finishing would be suitable areas for working in.

      Other vocational training, run in tandem with on-the-job training, is carried out at the Theodor-Heuss College in Wetzlar. This is done on a part-time basis, i.e. one or two college days a week.

       

      Content of the training course
      The training course for Industrial Manager (m/f) includes the following:
      Acquiring an in-depth knowledge of materials management, industrial marketing and HR management as well as finance and accounting
      Learning the processes in the commercial departments
      Confident knowledge of computer programmes (MS Office, SAP)
      Creating calculations, correspondence, reports and graphs

       

      Qualifications
      Very good school leaving certificate (GCSE or A Level equivalent)
      Interest in commercial issues
      Logical thought process and a willingness to learn and perform
      Independent working and flexibility
      Sociable nature, good communication skills and the ability to work in a team

       

      Examinations
