RESILIENCE

Evolution par excellence

Hummingbirds are the only bird family that can hover in one spot and rotate in the air. They are one of the smallest animals on the planet that incubate their eggs. The smallest species weigh just over two grams – a bit less than an American penny. Nevertheless, hummingbirds are one of the world's most resilient creatures. Over the centuries, hummingbirds in the mountain forests of South America have become indispensable for many plants.

In fact, as many as 8,000 plant species are pollinated exclusively by hummingbirds. In the early morning, when it's still too cold for many insects, these avian pollinators are out and about in spite of the rugged conditions, including in torrential rain. Hummingbirds have acquired these abilities by adapting to their environment. They have learned to hover in the air, their beak has become thinner and their tongue longer, allowing them to more easily access the nectar they crave.

All this allows them to cover the incredible amount of energy they require. When hovering, a hummingbird's heart beats around 400 times per minute, and the blood flows throughout its entire body in just one second. Every day, a hummingbird must consume more than its own weight in water. On average, it stops for a drink every 15 minutes. Exceptional survival skills are also a must-have in industry. New technologies are changing our lives at an unprecedented speed. And only those who find solutions to future challenges can be sure of their place in the world of tomorrow.
