Living and working abroad for a while is an experience from which employees and their families can greatly benefit. The Global Mobility department at ZEISS supports expats worldwide with their assignments.
Networking is becoming increasingly important for ZEISS and so is collaboration across countries and sites. In order to nurture this in the best way possible, ZEISS is offering employees willing to work abroad the scope to do this through its global assignment program with short-term global assignments. “Unlike being locally contracted abroad, the contractual relationship with the home site will continue to exist during an assignment so it is always possible to return to the home country,” explains Beatrix Brauner, Head of Global Mobility. This reassurance is one of the reasons why the number of assignments is growing: in 2024, more than 55 employees were given the opportunity by their specialist departments to move to an international ZEISS site. Expats are united by the urge to keep on developing themselves and step outside their comfort zone. All those who have had this experience at ZEISS regard it as being of benefit afterward. “An assignment is always associated with personal development, but it is also a challenge,” says Brauner. Global Mobility provides expats with the best possible support in terms of preparation, the on-site situation and their return to their home country. “We talk to all those involved, clarify requirements, explain processes and put together a contract package,” explains Brauner. “In addition, we organize intercultural and language training courses, provide specific support to find accommodation, suitable schools and kindergartens, and with relocating – often working with both external agencies and in close collaboration with local HR departments.“
The specialist departments also benefit enormously from the assignments through the transfer of expertise and the international network that the expats build up. “As a company, we think and act globally. This works best if you know the people on site, have a mutual understanding and can gauge the local context,” adds Brauner.
Mohan Kumar Chikkanna…

… has been on an assignment in Germany since September 2022, more precisely in Aalen, where he works as an Information Security Manager within ZEISS Vision Care. The experienced software professional joined the ZEISS subsidiary in Bangalore as Engineering Manager at the beginning of 2020 and shortly afterward took over the management of the newly created DevSecOps and Connectivity Solutions portfolio. In this role, he was leading a team. Yet Mohan is always looking for new challenges. “After 18 years in the industry, nine of them in management positions, I wanted to gain new experiences. My goal was to work as a security specialist at Vision Care headquarters, impacting all the different business areas,“ he said. Mohan discussed his career goals with his managers and was given the opportunity to go to Aalen for three years. Global Mobility provided Mohan and his family with intensive support during their preparations and the first few months in Germany. “Life in Germany meant a drastic change for us. We have now gotten used to the weather, especially the cold winters, and are very happy.“
Life in Germany meant a drastic change for me and my family. In the meantime we have settled in well.
Katrin Schultheiß…

… was on an assignment in Dublin, California from mid-2022 to mid-2024. She headed up the Field of Business X-ray Microscopy there and was responsible for global profitability and product management in this area. “I was immediately fascinated by the position in California. I had previously managed the Field of Business Electron Microscopy in Oberkochen. So not everything was new. It was more of a change of perspective. “I moved to a different technology area and took over a new team,“ says Schultheiss. “I had wanted to go abroad for a long time. A local contract was too risky for us as a family, but when the opportunity of an assignment arose, we started to firm up our plans,” says Schultheiss adding, ”It was difficult for my children to leave their friends behind, and the move wasn‘t easy for my husband either. That‘s why we set out our terms for the assignment.” It was important that the children went to a German school to make it easier for them to change schools. The family settled in quickly in California and the children made new friends. “The two years were enriching for us. The time (in Dublin) was also a real benefit for me with regard to ZEISS: the insights I gained into the Californian work culture and the international experience help me to adopt a global perspective.” Katrin Schultheiß is in charge of the ZEISS Product Center Light Microscopy since September 2024.
The insights into the Californian workplace culture and the international experience have made it possible for me to adopt a global perspective today.
