The Akashi Planetarium was established in 1960, commemorating the International Geophysical Year of 1957. In 1995 the heavy Kobe earthquake did also affect the neighbouring Akashi City. The planetarium building partially was damaged and had to be closed for some years. The Universal Projection Planetarium actually did not take notice of the earthquake – it has been operational.

Asahikawa, the second largest city on the island of Hokkaido, has one of Japan’s biggest science centers. Opened in 2005, the main attraction is the planetarium. Its ZEISS projector replaced a ZEISS small-dome planetarium, which had successfully performed in the service of knowledge transmission since 1963.

The Hanwoolbit Library is one of five for seven hundred inhabitants and specialized to science. The city authorities included a planetarium to the library to enhance science education.

The ZEISS True Black Hybrid Planetarium system for the 11 m dome is based on the combination of optical-mechanical and digital projection with integrated control. The hybrid system consists of a ZEISS ASTERION Starball for impressive depiction of the night sky and a ZEISS VELVET LED fulldome system. ASTERION replaced the 30-year-old M 1015 star projector from ZEISS in the center of the dome.

ZEISS equipped the planetarium with 360-degree dome projection system ("fulldome"). Eight digital projectors of the ZEISS VELVET LED series create a common video image with the worlds highest contrast on the dome. One challenge for ZEISS was to incorporate the existing star projector from Japan into the common control by the ZEISS UNIVIEW planetarium software. This allows the customer to operate and use the digital astronomical projections as well as the starry sky of the planetarium projector together.
