The building, a fine piece of architecture in the Népliget Park, is used for various kinds of events. In 1967 the Kaluga planetarium was opened for the public. The first Japanese instrument was replaced with a SKYMASTER planetarium from ZEISS. A mid-size projector ZEISS SPACEMASTER RFP has been the main projection machine for 20 years. In 2008 the refurbishment of the museum's planetarium brought a new ZEISS SKYMASTER ZKP 4 combined with powerdome SPACEGATE fulldome video.

The astronomical complex was put into operation in 1975. The museum purchased a small projection planetarium ZKP 1 from ZEISS. It was the first planetarium in a slovak museum. In 1982 the instrument was replaced with a new SKYMASTER ZKP 2 planetarium. The STM planetarium has been visited by more than 400,000 visitors.

The big draw at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937 was the ZEISS Planetarium. 60 years later, public shows were resumed with an entirely new planetarium projector, the ZEISS STARMASTER ZMP. The Palais de la découverte in Paris is believed to be visited by every child in France. It is remarkable to note that almost all shows are live presentations with the starry sky as the main feature. During a longer reconstrauction phase of the Palais the planetarium is using a mobile digital projection system from ZEISS.

In 1927 the city became the first place outside of Germany to have a planetarium. A new planetarium was built in the Kaisergarten, close to the giant Ferris wheel at the edge of the Prater, in 1962-64. In 2002 a new ZEISS UNIVERSARIUM Mark IX has been installed, complemented with digital dome projections by means of ZEISS VELVET projectors. The projectors have been upgraded to VELVET LED end of 2020.
