These spectacle frames are ahead of the pack
What frames are trending this year? And what do they suit best?
It's no surprise that fashion hunters are always one step ahead of consumers – and not just when it comes to clothing. They know exactly what spectacle frames fashion fans will soon be wearing. After all, stylish men and women want to prove that they're ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest trends. Read more to find out what frames and lenses are going to be en vogue this year.
The perfect shape
One thing is certain: this year's glasses are going to be big. Boho-style sunglasses with XL frames will top the fashion charts in this category. Those fashionistas who love the hippie look won't want to miss out on these frames. Prescription eyewear and large sunglasses made of acetate will be the way to go. But you'll also increasingly find filigree models with very thin frames – and even rimless glasses. Large frames are best suited for sunglasses because the large eye shape offers protection against harmful UV rays. This look was big in the 1970s – along with the smaller-sized round lenses. The John Lennon-style glasses have become a classic look – both with horn-rimmed and metal frames.
And while we're on the subject of metal: the latest thing from the world of glasses is definitely those golden, shiny thin metal frames. Trendsetters can pick the shape that's best for them – large, small, round or even teardrop. These ultra-fine frames are more than just stylish: they also complement every person's face. Of course thin frames require the right lenses, but the lenses shouldn't be too fragile. Thanks to DuraVision® Platinum Technology, it is possible to produce extremely hard ZEISS spectacle lenses. These have an anti-reflective coating and are extremely sturdy and dirt-resistant.
But now let's head back to the future: the legendary cat eye glasses are once again – or rather still – adorning the faces of unique fashionistas. These vintage glasses are available in unobtrusive shapes and with prominent curves. These complement a glamorous, fashionable look perfectly.

Another cult object is panto glasses. These were the trademark of the intellectual elite back in the 1920s. 30 years later they became everyone's first choice when it came to glasses. They normally feature round lenses flattened on the top and are traditionally black and brown. These days they're a great accessory for any personal style – no matter if you're the sporty or dapper type.

And there's another perfectly shaped detail on spectacle lenses experiencing a revival: the saddle-bridge. It used to be that only men wore models with a double bridge, but since then women have made this style their own. The keyhole bridge is also making a comeback: you can make your nose look longer because these glasses sit a little higher on your nose than is typical. Double bridge glasses have the opposite effect because these sit lower on your nose. The choice is yours: accentuate your nose or make it appear a bit smaller.

Favourite colours

Thanks to the large selection of trendy tints, there's a colour for everyone – from conspicuous to restrained, from a single colour to patterns. And the up-and-coming stars are frames with both horizontal and vertical colour gradients. Just keep this rule of thumb in mind: the more noticeable your frames are, the more restrained the colour of your clothes and spectacle lenses should be.
Black remains one of the traditional, elegant colours, but brown is catching up in all its different shades. Take your pick: caramel, mocha or havana – each earthy tint improves sunglasses with or without a prescription. They fit best with a traditional or purist look. And don't forget: your eyeglass lenses are another great opportunity to get colourful.

Mirror coatings

Mirror or reflective coatings can do exciting things with your lenses. The sky's the limit: from a slight shimmer all the way to a complete mirror coating. The intensity of the mirror coating depends on the base tint of the lens. You only perceive a slight shimmer with non-tinted or lightly tinted lenses.
ZEISS now offers lens coatings in exciting colours – from red to green to blue all the way to silver and gold. These lenses will certainly get you noticed! Lenses with a mirror coating work best in metal frames of every shape and with panto glasses.

Hot Stuff
Back-to-nature is also another obvious trend: wood, cork or leather represent sustainability and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. The combination of stainless steel and acetate is also quite popular. Here the colour and material mix: the sides and the bridge made of gold- or silver-coloured metal go hand-in-hand with acetate parts in black, brown or nude. These trendy frames fit every look and complement every complexion, making them a must-have for more than just one fashion season.
