Depth of field and resolution – performance comparison between three dental operating microscopes

A significant number of dental practitioners have recognized the benefits of Dental Operating Microscopes as it enhances the visualization of the oral cavity. Hereby, the two defining factors are the resolution and the depth of field. This study is a comparison of three microscopes in regard to these two defining features using the 1951 USAF Hi-Resolution Target (Edmund Optics, Barrington, NJ) and Depth of Field Target 5-15 (Edmund Optics, Barrington, NJ). The tests were performed using two calibrated observers on three Dental Operating Microscopes – the Seiler IQ (Seiler, St. Louis, USA), Global G-Series 6 step (Global, St. Louis, USA), and ZEISS EXTARO 300 (ZEISS Medical Technology, Oberkochen, Germany). To conclude, within the limitations of this study, the ZEISS EXTARO 300 achieved both the highest maximum resolution (64 lp/mm) as well as maximum Depth of Field (17 mm). Global G-Series comes in second and Seiler IQ in third place.
