The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, is a world-renowned research institution hosting a diverse group of scientists year-round to study foundational biology in an astounding number of model systems and organisms. That abundance and diversity attracts 1,200+ scientists and students from around the world each year to participate in research partnerships, fellowships and educational courses. With over 60 Nobel Prize winners having ties to the MBL, it's a nexus for biological discovery and education. MBL scientists have studied over 200 different kinds of marine organisms celebrating and making the best use of their unique location on the Massachusetss coast. The research and educational mission of MBL consistantly push the limits of our undertsanding of biology and microscopy while endeavoring to disseminate that knowledge into the scientific community.

ZEISS at the MBL

For 44 years running, ZEISS has supported MBL advanced research training courses as well as staff and visiting researchers. The relationships developed through this long tenure embody the emissions of both organizations to promoting science, technology development and dissemination, and education. Our commitment to MBL has included a fulltime onsite embedded imaging Specialist, international support from ZEISS colleagues in department including R&D, Advanced Application Development and Product Application Support, summer interns to support the course, and support 18-20 summer advanced research training courses, as well as Grass Fellows, Whitman Fellows, visiting summer investigators and year-round MBL investigators.

ZEISS Interns and Summer Activity

Summer Interns have been a unique mainstay of ZEISS's activities at MBL. For three months, the ZEISS interns serve both organizations while learning skills related not only to microscopy and biology, but also technical teaching and training, time and project management, communication while also building their professional and social network. Interns from a wide variety of biology and optics backgrounds and institutions assist with forming a welcome continuity over the summer as they develop expertise in microscopy and the biological sciences. ZEISS is honored to support an internship program that provides a means for students to expand their understanding of biology, imaging, and analysis among many other skills.

Course Directors from around the world have the chance to try instruments they may be interested in purchasing for their lab, core, or institute. It's a point of pride to bring in systems for students, and ZEISS is often the best point of contact for this reason.
For students, it's a first-time exposure to microscopy and imaging. It's also a first-time exposure to systems that might not be available back home, or to alternatives including ZEISS. These formative impressions as graduation looms and new labs are dreamed of can be invaluable for students.
