Nobody sees music like Dustin O’Halloran.

The American composer and synesthete shares his unique visual world.

Synesthesia is a rare phenomenon that affects only about 4% of the population. People with synesthesia see colors differently from others. Some experience sound-to-color synesthesia, also known as colored hearing or chromesthesia: when they hear a specific sound, they see a certain color – and vice versa.

Dustin O’Halloran approaches music differently because of his synesthesia. He thinks of colors first, rather than notes. He sees B as blue, D as red, G as orange, and C as yellow. Chords and harmonies create richer, more complex colors – even shapes, textures, and movement. For Dustin, using colors is an advantage he relies on and uses for composing. It’s just more intuitive.

Dustin O’Halloran is an Emmy Award–winning American pianist and composer with five acclaimed solo albums. He was also nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Critics’ Choice Award. He lives and works in Los Angeles and Reykjavik.

Do we all see the same color blue?

How would we know?

We are taught which colors are which, but what colors do we actually see? Do different people see them the same way?

Light enters the eye and travels through various surfaces that focus the light on the eye’s focal point, located at the back of the eye. Millions of specialized cells that have light-sensitive pigments enable us to recognize colors: This is where light is transformed into electrical impulses and transported to the brain. And it is the brain that gives meaning to the colors and shapes that we see. Given that we are all different and have our very own emotional response to what we see, it´s tough to know if we see the same blue. For some, colors even transcend the sense of sight.
