What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Everybody has the desire for a clear and sharp vision. Many people, however, do not have perfect vision, they are either nearsighted or farsighted or have astigmatism. These common eye conditions are what we call refractive errors. An eye surgeon can correct these refractive errors by using a laser to reshape the cornea so that light is properly focused onto the retina in order to improve vision without glasses and contact lenses.

The Eye

How vision works

One of the most sensitive and complex sensory organs is the eye, which allows you to comprehend all the visual information surrounding you. Sight is the result of the eye refracting incoming light onto the back of the eye. There are millions of receptors sending information to the optic nerve, which transfers this information to the brain. This is where a single, three-dimensional image is formed.

Methods for correcting refractive errors

Three types of Laser Vision Correction using different techniques make laser eye surgery an option for more patients than ever before and can be a viable alternative to classical visual aids like glasses and contact lenses. PRK/LASEK, LASIK and SMILE comprise the three types of Laser Vision Correction, first of which was developed in the 1980’s and continue to advance until today.
