ZEISS Microoptics

Rethinking Light.

From Microscopy to Holography: Precision in Every Wavelength

Microscopy has opened a window into structures once beyond our perception, and ZEISS has been leading this journey from the very beginning. What once started with looking deeper into the microscopic world now expands into new dimensions of visible light.

By making the invisible visible, microscopy transformed how science, technology, and industry understand the world. Today, this principle extends beyond observation. Modern optical systems are engineered not only to analyze light, but to precisely guide, structure, and direct it for functional applications. This evolution leads directly to holography. Instead of relying solely on conventional optical components, holographic structures manipulate light at the micro- and nano-scale, enabling entirely new approaches to information projection and optical integration.

ZEISS Microoptics is the only technology TIER1-provider for micro-optical and holographic solutions, covering the entire value chain. Our technologies translate deep tech into daily life products. This technological foundation makes holography scalable and industrially viable for use in vehicles, aircraft, and scientific environments. Our solutions integrate information, safety, and functionality directly into transparent and optical systems.

ZEISS Microoptics coordinates a scalable industrial framework connecting optical design, mastering, replication, glass integration, and system integration processes. This framework combines proprietary platforms, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and strategic partnerships to ensure reliable industrialization and long-term supply stability.

In automotive, aerospace, and other high-volume markets, we collaborate closely with selected technology and manufacturing partners to industrialize holographic solutions at scale. Initiatives such as the QuadAlliance demonstrate our commitment to strong, complementary partnerships that accelerate innovation and support platform adoption. Dedicated strategic teams continuously expand this network to create cross-industry leverages.

By aligning technology development, industrial processes, and long-term platform strategies, we ensure a seamless transition from laboratory precision to series production and large-scale deployment.

Over the past several years, ZEISS Microoptics has become a trusted partner across automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics industries. Our diffraction gratings deliver high optical performance under demanding conditions, forming the technological basis for scalable applications ranging from intelligent in-vehicle systems and adaptive windows to advanced human-machine interfaces and specialized scientific solutions.

A Gutenberg Moment for Holography.

Today, holography is reaching a transformative tipping point: a Gutenberg Moment, comparable to the historical revolution sparked by the printing press. Just as Johannes Gutenberg once enabled the mass distribution of knowledge, scalable micro- and nano-structuring now unlocks the industrial production of holographic optical components. What was once limited to research labs and niche applications is becoming accessible, manufacturable, and ready to transform everyday experiences.

This shift redefines how we integrate optics into our environments: HUDs are evolving from systems the size of a shoebox to surfaces as thin and discreet as a credit card. Windows become display and sensor platforms. Light becomes not just a medium, but a precisely controlled and scalable system element.

We are proud to be at the forefront of this transition. While holography has long played a role in scientific fields such as spectroscopy, beam shaping, and research instrumentation, the ability to scale production now opens entirely new markets. Significant cost reductions make it possible to bring holography into high-volume applications such as head-up displays, transparent displays, optical sensors, and solar technologies. By combining advanced optical design with industrial manufacturing processes, we make holography accessible for mobility, aerospace, consumer electronics, and many other everyday applications.

Where We’re Headed:

Holography as a platform technology

Our technologies go far beyond display. Through precision micro-structuring, we integrate optical functions invisibly into transparent surfaces, turning them into intelligent interfaces between humans and machines.

We combine four key technology fields:

  • Projection: ransparent displays for virtual, real, and in-plane content, up to 10,000 nt luminance with full-RGB dynamic content
  • Detection: Invisible sensor surfaces from UV to IR, enabling adaptive and safety-critical applications
  • Lighting: Compact, transparent surface emitters for maximum design freedom
  • Filtering: Embedded filter structures for selective light control and precision sensing

With more than 92 percent HOE transmittance, flexible scalability, and integration into curved surfaces, our solutions open new use cases from smart windshields and airport check-in terminals to immersive passenger experiences and interactive consumer interfaces.

Our vision: We develop scalable technology solutions for advanced mobility platforms. Our technologies support safety, sustainability, and design freedom across industries.

Our holographic system architecture redefines integration at the system level. It is compact, precise, and engineered for aerospace and automotive applications.

Technology Portfolio

Mastering structured light

At the core of all ZEISS Microoptics applications is the tailoring of light by optical nano- and micro-structures. We develop and manufacture a wide range of optical micro- and nanostructures for highly specific use cases:

High-Resolution Binary Structures

We develop high-resolution binary optical structures including diffraction gratings, diffractive optical elements (DOEs), and computer-generated holograms (CGHs) for precise light modulation and control.

Diffraction Gratings

We design and manufacture convex, concave, aspheric, and plane diffraction gratings with blazed, sinusoidal, or laminar groove profiles, optimized for maximum efficiency, minimal stray light, and high imaging quality across applications from spectroscopy to pulse compression.

Analog Diffractive Structures

We provide analog diffractive structures such as spectral gratings, beam shapers, and beam splitters designed for precise and application-specific light control.

Refractive Optical Components

We manufacture refractive optical components including diffusers, microlens arrays (MLAs), and beam transformers engineered for accurate beam shaping and homogenization.

Wide Range of Micro Optical Elements

We offer a comprehensive portfolio of refractive and diffractive elements, advanced substrate geometries, and flat or deep single- and double-sided structures tailored for beam shaping, beam splitting, homogenization, and controlled light diffusion.

This structural diversity enables tailored solutions for scalable industrial applications as well as highly specialized optics for aerospace, automotive, research, and next-generation consumer products.

Today, we have broadened our organization to serve key markets such as Automotive, Aerospace, and Industrial applications. Dedicated teams work hand-in-hand with customers to co-develop use cases and bring next-generation optical solutions into series production.
