The software ZEN is a flexible suite designed for controlling ZEISS light microscopes (and cameras), facilitating not only image acquisition, but also analysis, data management and processing, and correlative microscopy. The light microscopes supported are mainly used for applications in the life sciences.
ZEN core has been derived from ZEN originally. It is a software suite for connected microscopy serving microscopists using light and scanning electron microscopes across various fields, from materials research to life sciences, in industry or in academia. It streamlines image acquisition, analysis, and data management.
ZEN core for EM is a part of the ZEN core software suite. It lets you control standard workflows of ZEISS SEMs and additionally offers access to the complete functionality of ZEN core.
ZEN core supports every ZEISS SEM and FIB-SEM: EVO, Sigma, GeminiSEM and Crossbeam families.
You can run ZEN core for EM if you own a recent type of ZEISS SEM. For more information, please contact your sales representative.
With SmartSEM users can perform every task, simple or most demanding, as it is the traditional control software of ZEISS SEMs and FIB-SEMs.

With ZEN core you can perform standard workflows in a streamlined, intuitive way, but it does not completely replace SmartSEM, not yet. While more functionalities will be developed for ZEN core in the future, its capability range will be constantly growing, so stay tuned.
When using ZEN core, you can not only control your SEM but you can also execute measurements on your images, perform analysis such as image segmentation, overlay images with analytical data such as EDS in a correlative experiment, or manage all your data. In short, you can benefit from the complete functionality of the software suite.
ZEN and ZEN core offer the full functionality for advanced imaging and analysis.
ZEN lite is the free simplified version of ZEN, serving mainly life scientists.
ZEN starter is the free simplified version of ZEN core, serving mostly materials researchers. Limited features for measurements and basic correlative workspace functionalities are provided.
You can access a free trial license for your EM if you have the latest version of a ZEISS SEM. For more information, please contact your sales representative.

Comparing Segmentation Methods for Particle Analysis of Lithium Ion Battery Materials Using ZEN core

Accurate particle size measurement is vital in materials research, because it affects material properties. This study examines methods for analyzing particle size distributions and geometric features using light optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It tackles the challenges of segmenting individual particles by comparing three techniques: global thresholding, machine learning, and deep-neural-network instance segmentation in lithium-ion battery anodes.
