COSMORAMA was the first-class planetarium projector for large-size domes of 23 m in diameter in the 1980s. Developed by ZEISS in Jena it included a microprocessor control for all planetarium functions which allowed to switch between manual operation, direct programming and automatic replay. The instrument was equipped with all imaginable planetarium functions of the time. In addition to the planetarium-specific control, parallel computer communication was available for additional functions like special effect projectors.

The projector was developed specifically to meet customer requirements, especially those of the first customer in Edmonton, Canada, who opened its planetarium in the newly built Edmonton Space Sciences Centre on time on July 1, 1984. A total of four projectors have been delivered. COSMORAMA was replaced in the late 1980s by the new UNIVERSARIUM starball model series, which was also suitable for tilted domes.
